This ecological overviw is the first of its kind, as previous statistics released by APFI in 2024 and 2023 focused solely on production-specific ecological metrics. For the first time, the 2024 review includes an overview of Finland’s film and TV industry’s ecological history, a comparison of the industry’s state in 2021 and 2024, and examples of practical initiatives undertaken by funders, commissioners, and film commissions to promote environmental responsibility. The publication highlights that numerous practical efforts are already taking place to advance the industry’s sustainability on multiple levels. However, it also underscores that these efforts are insufficient for calculating the industry’s overall emissions. Many commissioners and funders are prepared to set ecological criteria for Finnish productions – if they haven’t already done so.
The publication is part of APFI’s ongoing work on ecological sustainability, initiated in 2021. APFI has partnered with the UK-based nonprofit organization albert, providing Finnish productions with free access to the albert toolkit; a carbon calculator and the opportunity to obtain certification. In 2025, APFI’s collaborations will expand to include the Norwegian Green Producers Club, whose tools enable the calculation of emissions not only for productions but also for production companies.
