Representation. Now!

A panel discussion on diversity representation in Finnish tv-series and feature films by APFI, Friday 25.9. at 14.30 EEST

How diverse is the Finnish television and feature film industry today in terms of characters, and how are the different minorities presented in these stories? This FFA industry session investigates the issue in the form of current statistics and hopefully gives us tools to make a change for the better.

A study on diversity statistics has been conducted for Audiovisual Producers Finland – APFI by students at the Film and Television at Metropolia School of Applied Sciences. The goal of the study is to examine representation of minority groups in Finnish feature films and TV series that launched during the years 2018 and 2019. The introduction to the statistics will be done by Milja Nieminen from Metropolia, whose thesis will be based on the study.

The panel discussion is moderated by writer-actor Jani Toivola. The panelists include Laura Kuulasmaa (Acquisitions Executive, Elisa Viihde), Jarmo Lampela (Head of Drama, YLE), Mahsa Malka (Head of Scripted, Endemol Shine Finland), Finnish-Sami director-screenwriter Suvi West, Pii Anttonen (film critic and expert by experience), Fiona ‘Elone (Coordinator, Ruskeat tytöt ry) and Sanni Purhonen (Publicist, Kynnys ry).

The discussion is streamed live and will also be seen on FFA’s Youtube channel later next week.
